The Benefits of Offering Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to Customers

If you’re a solar panel manufacturer, supplier, or installer, you’ll know that a key factor for your potential customers is cost.

Even those who are highly committed to reducing their environmental footprint and cutting carbon emissions need to balance their budget and ensure their green initiatives are affordable.

But often the upfront costs of energy-saving measures such as solar panels – either on rooftops or on adjacent land – are prohibitive, meaning they are unable to go forward despite their best intentions and strategic priorities.

This is where Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) come in. These are contractual agreements between a customer and an energy supplier to purchase electricity (commonly from renewable sources) at a fixed or variable cost over a defined period of time, often in exchange for the provider paying for and maintaining the renewable energy equipment required.

This means organisations from schools and universities to private companies and charities can have solar panels supplied and fitted at their premises with no, or minimal, upfront costs whilst also benefiting from the many other advantages that a PPA offers.

These include:

Ownership of the renewable energy equipment after the contract ends

Once the term of the contract is over, ownership of the renewable energy equipment supplied and installed by the energy provider (such as solar panels) is transferred to the customer.

Long-term cost savings and price predictability

One of the other primary advantages of entering into a PPA is the potential for cost savings. By locking in a fixed price for electricity over a long-term contract (anywhere between 10 and 30 years), businesses can shield themselves from the volatility of traditional energy markets which have seen prices skyrocket recently. The predictability of a fixed price arrangement also allows them to better manage their budgets and undertake more accurate financial planning.

Access to cutting-edge technology

PPAs often involve collaboration with renewable energy developers, giving businesses access to the latest advancements in clean energy technology. This collaboration fosters innovation and provides companies with the opportunity to integrate cutting-edge solutions into their operations.

Customised solutions for diverse needs

Power Purchase Agreements are flexible and can be tailored to meet the specific energy needs and goals of individual businesses. Whether it’s on-site generation, off-site renewable projects, or a combination of both, PPAs offer a range of options to suit diverse requirements. This flexibility ensures that organisations can adopt renewable energy solutions in a manner that aligns with their operational structures and strategic objectives.

Resilience against regulatory changes

The regulatory landscape for energy is evolving rapidly, with many governments implementing policies to encourage the transition to renewable sources. By entering into a PPA, businesses can insulate themselves from the potential impacts of future regulatory changes. The long-term nature of these agreements provides a degree of stability, allowing companies to adapt to new regulations without significant disruption to their operations.

Stakeholder and investor appeal

As sustainability becomes a focal point for investors and stakeholders, companies that embrace renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements are likely to attract greater interest and support. Investors are increasingly considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors when making investment decisions, and a commitment to renewable energy can positively impact a company’s stock value and reputation.

For solar panel manufacturers, suppliers, and installers, PPAs are an innovative and increasingly popular way to win new clients and accelerate their growth, particularly as they can be offered to prospective lucrative clients that are unable to borrow money or use debt financing, such as those in the public sector, including schools and hospitals.

In addition, manufacturers, suppliers, and installers can earn additional income from PPA revenue share arrangements with energy providers if contracts are structured in the right way by an experienced broker.

Sustainable Energy Finance (SEF) are FCA-authorised and regulated green finance specialists that work with manufacturers, suppliers, and installers – as well as public and private sector businesses – to source and arrange the green financing they need or want to provide to their customers.

They provide green finance solutions for projects and businesses around the world – including non-CAPEX and off-balance sheet arrangements – and never charge their clients a fee; instead, they receive an introduction payment from a lender if a client chooses to enter a finance agreement with them.

One company that is reaping the benefits of offering potential customers financial solutions arranged and managed by SEF is the Carbon Saving Group. Managing Director Thomas Read said: “Partnering with Sustainable Energy Finance has made a huge difference to our company.

“It enables us to offer our prospective clients finance options like Power Purchase Agreements and asset finance that enable them to go ahead with our energy-saving solutions without the need for upfront costs, capital expenditure, or debt.

“This not only benefits them financially in the short term but also means they save money on an ongoing basis by reducing their everyday energy costs.

“And as well as securing the client’s business, we also have the opportunity to generate a long-term revenue share through the agreement Sustainable Energy Finance creates for the client.

“It is a win-win situation that benefits everyone.”
